This could end up the best match of the round between former number one Angelique Kerber’s peerless defensive game and world number 10 Jelena Ostapenko’s brand of all-out attack. 36-year-old Kerber returned from maternity leave at the start of the season to help Germany win the United Cup but she claimed her best result of the year by far with a straight-sets victory over Petra Martic on Wednesday, moving back inside the top 500 in the live rankings for her efforts. 26-year-old Ostapenko brings a little uncertainty into Indian Wells after losing to Anna Kalinskaya at the Dubai Masters last time out, with her imperious start to the season seeing two WTA titles picked up in Adelaide and Linz before a relatively poor February. The Latvian’s powerful ball-striking should marry up well with the slightly slower hardcourts in the desert but Kerber will be backed well as a popular former finalist and a former US Open champion from 2016. Taking Ostapenko to win outright looks to be the most sensible course of action here but consider a one-off on Kerber to snatch with some momentum in her legs.
