24-year-old Liudmila Samsonova ended last season as one of the most in-form players on the WTA tour with three titles won on the late hardcourt swing in Washington, Cleveland and Tokyo. The Russian comes into the Australian Open at a career-high WTA world ranking of 19th after so much success last year but she has so far struggled to hit top gear in two, admittedly tight, straight-set defeats to Aryna Sabalenka and Amanda Anisimova at Adelaide 1 and 2. A round of 16 exit at the US Open last September suggests she can go deep in Melbourne but this no gimme against world number 65 Jasmine Paolini. The 27-year-old ended last season in strong form, finishing runner-up to Anna Blinkova at the Winners Open in Romania before closing out 2022 with an ITF title, and she could trouble Samsonova early here if the Russian starts slowly. The suitably cautious move is backing Samsonova to come through the outright winner.
