THE PREDICTION

World number 57 Emil Ruusuvuori overcame Marseille champion Ugo Humbert in three tight sets on Wednesday to make a big statement in Rotterdam but Jan-Lennard Struff also enjoyed an excellent three-set comeback over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. 24-year-old Ruusuvuori is capable of much better tennis than his current deflated ranking suggests and he looks ready to enjoy a ruse back to the top 40 after starting 2024 strongly, with a run to his maiden final at the Hong Kong Open and a five-set exit to eventual runner-up Daniil Medvedev at the Australian Open last month.

Comparatively, 33-year-old Struff’s ranking of 25th is probably a little inflated at this moment in time but the German earned it with a remarkable run to the Madrid Masters final last May. Struff will be desperate to maintain enough form and fitness to have another crack at finally winning a maiden title of his own on the incoming clay swing but Ruusuvuori is probably the more dependable performer in indoor hardcourt conditions. Back the Finn to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable quarter-finalists.
