THE PREDICTION
27-year-old Jan Choinski overcame Brazilian up-and-comer Joao Fonseca in three sets on Wednesday, backing up a strong qualifying campaign, but the Brit finds himself once again the severe underdog against world number 10 Hubert Hurkacz. Choinski enjoyed a career-best run to the second round on home soil at Wimbledon last summer before Hurkacz ended his journey early in straight sets but this could come a little closer as the Pole is far from his best on clay. Hurkacz, also 27, has struggled to fully impose himself on tour since an excellent run to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open was ended in five gruelling sets by Daniil Medvedev and it is worth noting that he crashed out of Estoril this time last season, losing to Bernabe Zapata Miralles. Backing Hurkacz to win in straight sets should, realistically, still come off but it could be worth taking at least a tiebreak here between two heavy hitters – just in case Choinski manages to snatch a set.
TIP: OVER 0.5 TIEBREAKS
