THE PREDICTION

World number 21 Frances Tiafoe received a bye to the round of 16 here in Houston as the third seed and defending champion but he brings perhaps his worst spell of form since bursting onto the scene in 2019. The 26-year-old set a career-high ATP world ranking of 10th after coming closer than anyone to beating Carlos Alcaraz at the US Open in 2022, losing out on five sets in the semi-finals, and he won titles here and in Stuttgart last season to complete the surfaces set. However, Tiafoe has looked a shadow of himself since losing to Ben Shelton in the last eight at New York last summer, with a 7-7 record for 2024 so far depicting a poor run by his high standards.

World number 105 James Duckworth beat Gijs Brouwer in the first round to bring some momentum into this intriguing clash and he will be well aware of his opponent’s current fragility. It remains to be seen if defending a title will help or further hinder Tiafoe’s apparently shattered confidence in this opening match but he has tended to at least get a win on the board before defeat in recent months. Back the American to win outright.

TIP: FRANCES TIAFOE TO WIN
