THE PREDICTION
World number 30 Irina-Camelia Begu survived an early scare at the Australian Open but she ultimately coped well with a last-minute change of opponent in a three-set victory over Elizabeth Mandlik. The 32-year-old reached the round of 16 here back in 2015 but after some years in the wilderness her results started to pick up in late 2021 and she matches that run at Roland-Garros last summer. The Romanian is probably at her best on clay, on which she won the Palermo Ladies Open last summer for a fifth career title, but so is former world number 27 Laura Siegemund. The current world number 158 has been enjoying some decent performances in recent months and the hard work paid off on Tuesday with a comeback victory over Lucia Bronzetti seeing her snap a run of five first round exits at majors. The German will be a serious test here after such a confidence boost and she leads their head-to-head record 3-1 after most recently beating Begu on clay in 2020. Whilst Begu should come through the outright winner it could be worth taking Siegemund to earn at least a set here, with the most suitably cautious option backing Begu to take at least one herself.
