World number one Iga Swiatek is through to her third Grand Slam final, and first outside of Paris, after an assured comeback victory over Aryna Sabalenka on Thursday. The 21-year-old has won both of her previous Grand Slam finals at Roland-Garros in 2020 and more recently this summer, the sixth tournament won in a row during an incredible 37-match winning streak. Swiatek is yet to win a tournament during the second half of a season, that is to say from Roland-Garros onwards, but despite limitations on grass she has always possessed the game for hardcourts alongside her favoured clay. A run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open back in January was ended by eventual runner-up Danielle Collins.
ONS JABEUR
28-year-old Ons Jabeur extended her 100% record over Caroline Garcia in some style on Thursday night, ousting the in-form but oddly out of sorts Frenchwoman in two comfortable sets. Jabeur will rise to a career-high WTA world ranking of second no matter the outcome of this final as she looks well set to reach her goal of becoming the first African player to qualify for the WTA Finals. That would be all the more impressive considering Jabeur received no ranking points for reaching her first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon back in July where she took the first set before defeat to Elena Rybakina. The Tunisian won a first Masters title at the Madrid Open in May on clay, with her two other WTA titles so far coming on grass from Birmingham last season and the Berlin Open in June.
THE PREDICTION
This is a highly deserving second chance at a Grand Slam title for 28-year-old Ons Jabeur after the Tunisian came so close to making history, or at least more history, at Wimbledon back in July. Iga Swiatek is just as deserving of her place in this final as a truly insurmountable world number one this season, coming back into form after a choppy summer at just the right time to reach a first hardcourt major final, but the Arthur Ashe crowd is likely to pull towards Jabeur here. Not only is world number five Jabeur one of the most popular players on tour she has the more eye-catching, entertaining game of the two finalists that is likely to win neutrals over to her side the longer this match continues.
Nevertheless, Iga Swiatek is the clear favourite to claim the third Grand Slam title of her career with her own brand of ruthless, electrifying tennis and whomever wins this title will be a celebrated new champion of New York. The pair share a fascinating head-to-head finely poised at 2-2, with Swiatek winning their first meeting in 2019 and most recent in the final of the Italian Open back in May. Jabeur’s two victories came last season at Wimbledon and Cincinnati. The latter of which is the most compelling reason to back her here in similar conditions to New York. However, Swiatek’s champion mentality and experience should tell here. The Pole has won each of her last nine tour finals, only losing her first ever back in 2019 at the Lugano Open. Back the world number one to win outright, probably in three.
