22-year-old Iga Swiatek will start a tournament as world number two for the first time since Ash Barty’s retirement early last season catapulted her into pole position. The Pole took to the role like a duck to water, embarking on a 37-match winning streak from February through to July that included four Masters titles and a second Roland-Garros, but her shock defeat to Jelena Ostapenko in the round of 16 at the US Open three weeks ago saw Aryna Sabalenka usurp her. It will be fascinating to see how Swiatek responds over the coming months but after struggling with increasing competition this season it would not be a surprise to see her positively come out fighting without the target on her back. World number 148 Mai Hontama beat a fellow home hopeful, Nao Hibino, in straight sets on Monday but she has drawn the shortest straw possible here. Tokyo will do its best for Hontama but expect a refreshed and hungry Swiatek to blast through a match with fewer than 17.5 games.
