THE PREDICTION

The WTA tour should fear world number one Iga Swiatek more than usual right now after she backed-up her Qatar Open title defence on Saturday with another ruthless victory on Tuesday, beating Leylah Fernandez 6-1, 6-1. The 21-year-old began her incredible 37-match winning streak at this stage of last season but Liudmila Samsonova came about as close as anyone to halting it in a tight three-set defeat to the Pole in the semi-finals of the Stuttgart Open. That first meeting between the two suggests this could be a proper thriller on Wednesday and it will be fascinating to see how Swiatek reacts if she does drop a set in this current form. World number 13 Samsonova came back from a set down to beat Paula Badosa on Sunday before a welcome walkover through to the round of 16. Backing Swiatek to win in straight sets should come through but Samsonova has proper fangs on court that suggest taking the hit is sensible. Either back Swiatek to win outright or risk a one-off on the Russian to earn at least a set.
