THE LOWDOWN

IGA SWIATEK

World number one Iga Swiatek is through to the quarter-finals of the US Open for a first time despite yet finding her best tennis, displayed in a comeback victory over Jule Niemeier on Monday. The Pole reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open back in January in a similar vein of transitional form before bursting into life to win six-straight tournaments including four Masters titles and a second Grand Slam title at Roland-Garros. Swiatek beat Jessica Pegula in the semi-finals of the Miami Open and the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros on her way to winning both.

JESSICA PEGULA

World number eight Jessica Pegula is the current US number one through remarkable consistency as a player who has matched her seeding in all but two tournaments this season. The 28-year-old is through to the quarter-finals of the US Open for a first time, and her third major quarter-final this season after similar runs in Melbourne and Paris, after ousting in-form Petra Kvitova in comfortable straight sets. Pegula beat Iga Swiatek in their first ever meeting on tour en-route to her only WTA title to date at the Washington Open back in 2019.

THE PREDICTION

There is plenty of extra motivation in this match for Jessica Pegula, not least that she will play on Arthur Ashe in the last eight for the first time as the US number one, as she faces a player who has ended two of her best runs this season. It has become commonplace to see the American drawn in the same quarter or half of a tournament as world number one Swiatek and her year could have been markedly different, particularly at Roland-Garros where she was going especially well, without coming against the Pole in the form of her young career. Swiatek has stuttered and faltered through most of her matches in New York but she showed champion’s grit to come back against a rising star like Niemeier and two wins over Pegula this season is strong reasoning to pick a third here. However, Pegula’s dismissal of Kvitova and the wild support she should receive not only as a home number one but New York native feels like nudging this third match in her favour. Back Pegula to win outright here or at least a set inside an accumulator.
