THE PREDICTION
World number one Iga Swiatek is the defending champion at Indian Wells and she has so far played like it, seeing off three early challenges by Bianca Andreescu, Emma Raducanu and Sorana Cirstea before winning all three matches in straight sets. The 21-year-old has lost just three times this season to Jessica Pegula at the United Cup, Barbora Krejcikova at the Dubai Masters final and next opponent Elena Rybakina, who ousted her from the round of 16 at the Australian Open. World number 10 Rybakina eventually finished runner-up to Aryna Sabalenka in Melbourne and she has lost just once since to Beatriz Haddad-Maia in Dubai. The 23-year-old was made to work very hard for her three-set victory over Karolina Muchova on Thursday but she remains a clear title contender at Indian Wells and probably the player Swiatek would least like to have drawn amongst the remaining four. The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head record but this is probably their first encounter in which both players are at or near the peak of their powers at the same time.
Rybakina seems to have the on-court personality that sees her perennially underestimated but the world-class game to make a fool of those who do. Whilst Swiatek remains the favourite as the defending champion here three sets seem likelier than two and that makes taking Rybakina to earn at least a set look the shrewd move here in leaving the winner up to chance.
