THE LOWDOWN

IGA SWIATEK

World number nine Iga Swiatek has conceded just seven games so far at the Australian Open in comprehensive wins over Harriet Dart and Rebecca Peterson. The 20-year-old blasted through the draw in much the same way at Roland-Garros in 2020 to win as a relatively unknown teenager and she has since won a first Masters title at the Italian Open as well as the Adelaide International last season. Swiatek has reached the round of 16 in Melbourne in each of her last two appearances.

DARIA KASATKINA

Former world number 10 Daria Kasatkina is in serious form in 2022, with back-to-back semi-finals reached in Melbourne and Sydney and just nine games conceded so far in straight-set wins over Stefanie Voegele and Magda Linette. The current world number 23 won two more WTA titles last season, for a career total of four, with strong campaigns at the Phillip Island Trophy and St. Petersburg Open. Back-to-back quarter-finals at Roland-Garros and Wimbledon in 2018 remain her best Grand Slam showings to date.

THE PREDICTION

This is the first tough test in Melbourne for Iga Swiatek with Daria Kasatkina the winner of their only previous meeting in a three-set result at the Eastbourne International last summer. The Pole should find a way through but Kasatkina’s steady improvement on tour over the last year is becoming very hard to stop. The Russian lost to eventual Melbourne Summer Set 1 champion Amanda Anisimova in the semi-finals at the start of the year and then in the same stage of last week’s Sydney Tennis Classic to eventual champion Paula Badosa. That working level should be matched by Swiatek, who lost to eventual Adelaide champion Ash Barty in the semi-finals there. There could be three sets in this one but that takes taking Swiatek to win at least one the suitably cautious option here.
