THE PREDICTION

World number eight Iga Swiatek finally beat Maria Sakkari at the fourth time of asking in a straight-sets victory on Friday to reach her second Masters final. The 20-year-old won her first 6-0, 6-0 with her ruthless will to win proving too much for Karolina Pliskova at the Italian Open last season. The Pole recently reached the Australian Open semi-finals before a sub-par performance against an excellent Danielle Collins but her defeat of an improving Aryna Sabalenka in the quarter-finals made her look the favourite for the title. That is, however, probably not the case with red-hot Anett Kontaveit continuing to blast past almost anyone on tour. The 26-year-old finally ended Jelena Ostapenko’s hot streak in a straight-sets victory to make it nine wins in a row for the Estonian since winning the St. Petersburg Open two weeks ago.

The head-to-head record is so finely poised at 2-2 between these two players, making for a likely thrilling final on Saturday. Swiatek has won the two most recent meetings in two of their three Grand Slam battles in the third round of both Roland-Garros and the US Open last season, with Kontaveit winning their first two to lead their hardcourt record 2-1. Their most recent match went to three sets and with three tiebreaks played between them so far this looks tight enough to suggest three sets could well take place again. Back Swiatek to win at least one of them, with her ruthless record in prestigious finals likely to see her at least force this all the way.
