THE PREDICTION

25-year-old Caroline Dolehide set a career-high WTA world ranking of 41st after a stunning, shock run to the Guadalajara Masters final last September, losing to a briefly peak version of Maria Sakkari in straight sets. The American conceded just two games against Cristina Bucsa in the first round here to suggest she enjoys the conditions in the desert but this looks too steep of a step-up in quality against former number one Victoria Azarenka, who is a two-time former champion here from 2012 and 2016. 34-year-old Azarenka counts two Grand Slam titles and an incredible eight Masters titles amidst her 21 career accolades, including the rare feat of a ‘Sunshine Double’ (Indian Wells and Miami Open back-to-back) in 2016, and she was a champion at this level as recently as 2020 at the Western & Southern Open. Dolehide could well snatch a set here if she can emulate her first round efforts but backing Azarenka, who has enjoyed some strong form this year already, to win in straight sets seems a reasonable risk.

TIP: VICTORIA AZARENKA TO WIN 2-0
