HUBERT HURKACZ
World number 11 Hubert Hurkacz has had to reach the round of 16 the hard way in Melbourne but two five-set victories over Lorenzo Sonego and Denis Shapovalov suggest the Pole’s mentality is in a strong place at present. The 25-year-old reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon back in 2021, famously becoming the last player to beat Roger Federer on tour in a quarter-finals win at SW19, but this is his first time through to the second week of the Australian Open. Hurkacz won the Halle Open last season on grass but his best title came at the Miami Masters in 2021.
SEBASTIAN KORDA
22-year-old Sebastian Korda put in one of the performances of his promising young career on Friday to oust last season’s runner-up, Daniil Medvedev, in straight sets. The American will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 28th no matter the result here after some excellent work on tour over the last few months, with his defeat in three sets to Novak Djokovic at Adelaide 1 his third tour final in five tournaments. Korda has matches his best Grand Slam runs at Wimbledon and Roland-Garros by reaching the round of 16 in Melbourne for the first time.
THE PREDICTION
Hubert Hurkacz has been made to work hard for his Melbourne wins so far but overcoming Sonego, who had a healthy lead in their head-to-head, and Shapovalov’s impressive comeback suggest he is getting harder to beat with each passing round. The Pole beat Sebastian Korda in their only previous meeting to win the Delray Beach Open final in 2021 but after a fairly concerning first two thirds of 2022 Korda looks a vastly-improved player this season. The American’s straight-sets victory over Medvedev does not tell the full story but tactically he was near-perfect against a dangerous opponent, coming into the net to defuse the Russian whenever possible. Hurkacz is excellent at the net himself, one of the best on the ATP tour, and that could be where this match is eventually won with sets likely going both ways. Korda’s momentum will be tough to stop here but Hurkacz is deceptively resolute at his best. Back both players to win at least a set or Korda to win at least two to leave the victor up to chance.
