THE PREDICTION

World number 17 Hubert Hurkacz came back from a set down to beat Fabian Marozsan on Friday, reaching successive semi-finals at Masters events after defeat at this stage to Carlos Alcaraz in Cincinnati back in August. The 26-year-old has an excellent record at this level, winning his maiden Masters title at the Miami Open in 2021 and finishing runner-up in Montreal last summer, but he faces a serious test here in Sebastian Korda, who has certainly endured the tougher pathway. 23-year-old Korda will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 23rd after a thrilling comeback over Ben Shelton on Friday, with Shelton claiming their first-set tiebreak 12-10 before an 8-6 defeat in the third. Korda stunned second seed Danill Medvedev in the third round and for a second time this season after a remarkable victory over the Russian at the Australian Open in January, where he later overcame Hurkacz in five gruelling sets.

Hurkacz beat Korda to win the Delray Beach Open title in 2021 to see their head-to-head record finely poised at 1-1 and this should be a thrilling opener in Shanghai. Sets should go both ways here so back the American to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance, given his incredible results so far.
