World number 10 Hubert Hurkacz beat Roberto Bautista Agut in three tight sets on Tuesday to start what should be a promising campaign in Rotterdam. The 25-year-old could do with a deep run at a tournament of this level after flattering to deceive for much of last season, with his excellent campaign at Halle last summer proof of what he is capable when on song. Hurkacz will have to beat Grigor Dimitrov for the first time, though, as the Bulgarian leads their head-to-head 2-0 after wins at Indian Wells in 2021 and Monte-Carlo last season. The world number 28 conceded just four gam3es to Aslan Karatsev on Monday and it has taken top 10 opposition to knock him out of his last three tournaments, suggesting that this could come very close against the fifth seed. Both of Dimitrov’s wins came in three sets and with Hurkacz struggling to maintain his best level for whole matches right now perhaps three sets is the shrewd move here. Otherwise back the Pole to win at least one of them as the likelier of two very capable victors.
