THE PREDICTION

Former world number 20 Guido Pella enjoyed his best performance since returning from injury in a comeback victory over Juan Pablo Varillas on Wednesday. The 32-year-old is currently ranked outside the top 500 on tour after missing more than a year through injury but two wins this month at Indian Wells and now Miami suggest he could enjoy climbing up the rankings over the summer. World number 30 Denis Shapovalov is always capable of an early exit at a tournament, with a straight-sets defeat to Ugo Humbert this time a fortnight ago not surprising, but he similarly always has the potential to go on a deep run. The 23-year-old appears to be struggling with his coaching set-up in the background of some pretty poor form but despite losing four of his last five matches he should have enough to edge past Pella, who is still building up confidence in his body. Leave this match out of an accumulator but consider taking at least a tiebreak here in lieu of siding with either player.
