World number 19 Grigor Dimitrov came back from a set down to beat Carlos Alcaraz on Wednesday, claiming the highest ranking win since beating then world number two Daniil Medvedev at Indian Wells in 2021. The 32-year-old has been enjoying a strong spell of form on tour since the late clay swing but there had looked to be a ceiling after suffering three defeats in quick succession to Alexander Zverev over the summer. 28-year-old Nicolas Jarry will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 21st after overcoming a resurgent Diego Schwartzman on Wednesday, reaching the quarter-finals of a Masters tournament for the first time. The Chilean has enjoyed the best season of his career by some way in 2023, winning a further two ATP titles in Santiago and Geneva – the latter of which he beat Dimitrov in the final. Dimitrov’s victory over Alcaraz sets out his stall as the favourite here but it is worth noting that Jarry has won both of their previous encounters.
