THE PREDICTION
World number 28 Grigor Dimitrov won the battle between two of the most unpredictable players on tour on Tuesday with an impressive three-set victory over Aslan Karatsev. The former world number three reached the semi-finals here back in 2017, the same year he ended up ATP Finals champion before his significant depreciation over the past few seasons, and he has enjoyed some memorable performances in Melbourne over the years. Trying to predict what sort of campaign the Bulgarian may have this fortnight is, frankly, useless but a first meeting on tour with world number 68 Laslo Djere should favour him heavily on hardcourt conditions. 27-year-old Djere stunned Casper Ruud in Auckland last week before a loss to Constant Lestienne in the quarter-finals and he started well on Tuesday in a four set victory over Zizou Bergs. Djere is a great battler over five sets but Dimitrov should be able to outmanoeuvre the Serb in the key moments. Dimitrov is about as likely to win the Australian Open as lose in three sets here, though, so take him to win outright but consider leaving this out of an accumulator.
