World number 62 Diana Shnaider brings a three-match losing streak into the Italian Open but she possesses plenty of the tools required to excel on clay eventually, with a three-set exit to Beatriz Haddad-Maia at Roland-Garros a marker for better things ahead. The 20-year-old won her maiden WTA title at the Hua Hin Championships in early February but she finished runner-up to Elisabetta Cocciaretto at a quality Challenger event on clay in Charleston a month later to prove her ability in these conditions. World number 76 Greet Minnen made the third round of the Miami Open on her favoured hardcourt in March but she also impressed at the Charleston challenger, making the semi-finals before defeat to Cocciaretto. A first meeting between the two should go Shnaider’s way at their respective best levels but back the Russian to earn at least a set here to leave the result up to chance.
