THE PREDICTION

World number 16 Karen Khachanov beat Laslo Djere in straight sets on Sunday to get his mIami campaign underway solidly but a shock defeat to Thiago Seyboth Wild at Indian Wells two weeks ago is still fresh in the memory. The 27-year-old is usually uber dependable against lower-ranked foes when fit, proving so with a rock-solid run to the Qatar Open title last month, but he should be better for a settler here. World number 21 Francisco Cerundolo needed three sets to overcome an impressive assault by Sebastian Ofner on Saturday but he looks set for a much steeper challenge here. The 25-year-old first burst onto the scene with a huge run to the semi-finals at the Miami Open two years ago and he came close to emulating that last year before a consummate defeat to Khachanov, who went on to take three sets from eventual champion Daniil Medvedev in the semis. Khachanov leads their head-to-head record 2-0 after a three-set first encounter at the Canada Masters in 2022, so back the Russian to edge through the outright victor here.

TIP: KAREN KHACHANOV TO WIN
