THE PREDICTION
World number 30 Francisco Cerundolo enjoyed a brilliant breakthrough season in 2022, first embarking on an incredible run to the semi-finals of the Miami Masters out of nowhere before enjoying an excellent clay swing in which he claimed his maiden ATP title at the Bastad Open. However, the 24-year-old has won just three matches since the start of the late hardcourt swing and two defeats from two in 2023 suggests there is more than a chance of an upset for fellow Argentine Guido Pella despite the fact that the 32-year-old has not played for over a year. Former world number 20 Pella reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon back in 2019 before an unfortunate amount of injuries and setbacks plagued the next two seasons. Pella’s last tour-level match came in late 2021 but he has often managed to take a set or two at major tournaments since the start of 2020 to suggest this could be one of the shocks of the round. Realistically, Cerundolo can be backed to win outright here but it could be worth taking Pella to earn at least a set.
