THE PREDICTION

World number 19 Frances Tiafoe continued a promising pursuit of the Japan Open title with a straight-sets victory over Pedro Martinez on Thursday. The fourth seed recently reached the semi-finals of the US Open before a five-set defeat to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz but he has since pushed one rather than fall by the wayside. Two huge results at the Laver Cup over Stefanos Tsitsipas and a doubles victory over Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer helped Team World to a first ever victory in the competition and that looks to have given Tiafoe the taste for more success. World number 33 Miomir Kecmanovic will be a tough opponent, though, especially after surviving two tough three-set slogs against Yoshihito Nishioka and Dan Evans so far in Tokyo. Tiafoe has beaten Kecmanovic in straight sets in both of their previous meetings but both players have improved this season to suggest this could come closer. Back Tiafoe to edge it outright or take the American to win at least a set inside an accumulator.
