THE PREDICTION

World number 16 Frances Tiafoe is yet to drop a set at Indian Wells after two solid performances over Marcos Giron and Jason Kubler. The 25-year-old won plenty of new fans with his incredible run to the semi-finals of the US Open last September, where he came as close to anyone to beating eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set epic. Tiafoe should tread carefully here, though, as this is exactly the sort of match he can sometimes trip up in away from the immediate spotlight of facing a top player. World number 187 Alejandro Tabilo is enjoying the best run at this level of his career so far and seemingly out of the blue after qualifying this week before stunning 32nd-seed Maxime Cressy and Stefanos Tsitsipas’ vanquisher Jordan Thompson. The Chilean had not won a match this season before coming to Indian Wells but he can be a top 50 player with some better luck fitness-wise and this is no gimme at all. In many ways it would be easier to back Tiafoe against the likes of Tsitsipas than Tabilo, so take the American to win outright and certainly leave this match out of an accumulator.
