THE PREDICTION
Former world number six Felix Auger-Aliassime brings a two-match losing streak into Indian Wells as he continues to seek out anything like his former glory on tour. The 23-year-old only just made the seeds here at world number 31 but it is arguable that he would have preferred to play a kind first round fixture as he desperately looks to recover from a horror season last year – albeit saved from total destitution by defending his Swiss Indoors title in October. Each of Auger-Aliassime’s five ATP titles have come indoors to cement a theory that the Canadian’s top level, currently nowhere to be seen, requires controlled conditions and the occasionally blustery environment here at Indian Wells could see him struggle.
World number 100 Constant Lestienne is unlikely to cause his opponent too much trouble here but the Frenchman will do well to utilise all of his notorious tricks to try and frustrate his way to victory. A comeback over Denis Kudla on Wednesday is one of his better results on tour recently but it would be a huge surprise to see even this version of Auger-Aliassime upset here. The suitably cautious call is taking the Canadian to win outright, though, and so therefore a one-off punt on Lestienne to snatch a set could be the only credible option.
TIP: FELIX AUGER-ALIASSIME TO WIN
