World number nine Felix Auger-Aliassime failed to win any of his first eight ATP tour finals but after taking his first at the ninth attempt last weekend at the Rotterdam Open he looks the fair favourite to make it back-to-back. The 21-year-old made it eight matches won in a row with a solid straight-sets victory over a vastly impressive Roman Safiullin, who took out Stefanos Tsitsipas on Friday. World number seven Andrey Rublev has dropped sets in all three of his matches this week in Marseille and all against Frenchman he should feasibly be beating in two in Richard Gasquet, Lucas Pouille and Benjamin Bonzi. The 24-year-old’s ruthless streak seems just out of his reach right now but his determination not to lose is as strong as ever.
The Russian won the first two meetings between these two young players but Auger-Aliassime took him out at the semi-final stage of the Rotterdam Open last week and that looks a pretty solid benchmark for what may transpire again here with each of their three matches needing a decider so far.
