THE PREDICTION
24-year-old Fabian Marozsan overcame eighth seed Casper Ruud in three sets on Tuesday, claiming his second top 10 win of the season after bursting onto the scene with a huge upset over Carlos Alcaraz at the Rome Masters in May. The Hungarian also stunned in-form world number 11 Alex de Minaur in the second round last Friday to look a considerable threat and his victory over a currently quite vulnerable Ruud was all the more impressive in its lack of surprise. World number 17 Hubert Hurkacz will be a totally different prospect, though, as the Pole looks to be on the up after a very dodgy 2023 by his standards. The 26-year-old overcame a tough onslaught by Chinese number one Zhizhen Zhang on Tuesday, winning the first and third set tiebreaks in his customary hard-to-beat style to back up some encouragingly solid results in Shanghai. Hurkacz reached the round of 16 of the Canada Masters and semi-finals in Cincinnati before three-set defeats to Carlos Alcaraz in each and another quarter-final at ATP 1000 level is a big indicator for improving confidence on court.
Marozsan is still, relatively, an anomaly on tour but he has nothing to lose here and no baggage to speak of. The Hungarian will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 65th in defeat here but the top 50 awaits if he can spring another upset. Back Hurkacz to win at least a set and add at least one tiebreak in the match to leave the result up to chance.
