THE PREDICTION

33-year-old Evgeniya Rodina will be on cloud nine after winning her first match back on tour since June 2019, ousting 27th-seed Martina Trevisan in straight sets. The Russian has actually matched her best showing at the US Open by reaching the second round but she made the round of 16 at Wimbledon as recently as 2018 before retiring a year later. This looks a step too far, though, against one of the toughest unseeded players to draw this fortnight in Ajla Tomljanovic. The Aussie made the quarter-finals at Wimbledon last month for a second-successive season, on both occasions losing to the eventual champion in Ash Barty and Elena Rybakina, and she grabbed a great opening result on Monday with victory over Karolina Muchova. The 29-year-old stunned Paula Badosa at the Cincinnati Open two weeks ago and also beat Veronika Kudermetova for a second-week running to suggest she is at a working level close to the world’s top 20. Back Tomljanovic to win in straight sets here, although Rodina is a dangerous anomaly worth treating with caution inside an accumulator.
