World number 95 Taro Daniel made headlines at the Australian Open last season with a brilliant three-set victory over Andy Murray in the second round and he took a set from Jannik Sinner before defeat in the third. The 29-year-old grabbed some other eye-catching results last year but his talent has never been in question on tour as one of the more frustrating, inconsistent players over the last decade. Daniel’s last tour-level win came in October at the Napoli Cup but he has been offered what looks a fairly winnable opener on paper here against world number 310 Ernesto Escobedo. 26-year-old Escobedo found some strong form in 2021 but last season was a severe depreciation for the former top 80 player. Escobedo qualified well this week, though, to bring some momentum into this first meeting with Daniel that makes this match a tough call. With sets likely to go both ways back Daniel to earn at least one of them and leave the victor up to chance.
