21-year-old Caty McNally set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 73rd after reaching the semi-finals of the Merida Open two weeks ago. McNally beat in-form Lin Zhu in Mexico on her way to the last four and she looked in good shape at the Austin Open last week before a mis-matched defeat to Danielle Collins in the round of 16. That should be level enough to beat world number 128 Emma Navarro, also 21, who also made the round of 16 last week at the Monterrey Open before defeat to eventual champion Donna Vekic. This first tour-level meeting between two home hopefuls should draw a decent crowd but it is likely that McNally will receive the lion’s share of the backing after her successes in Women’s Doubles on US soil.
