Emina Bektas and Kimberly Birrell lost in the quarter-finals of the Women’s Doubles on Thursday and now they will face off in the quarter-finals of the singles. 30-year-old Bektas will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 108th after a straight-sets victory over Su Jeong Jang on Thursday. The American enjoyed an excellent run of form on grass this summer to bring her into contention for mire tour-level events and the hard work is paying off in Seoul, with this a huge opportunity for both her and Birrell to reach a rare semi-final. 25-year-old Birrell will move back up to her career-high of 100th after a blistering win over Back Da-yeon, who had stunned Jelena Ostapenko in the previous round, and she looks the slight favourite here having not yet dropped a set. A first tour-level meeting between the two should be their tightest yet but Birrell has won both of their encounters in qualifiers, including last summer in New York. Take the Aussie to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
