THE PREDICTION

21-year-old Elizabeth Mandlik claimed a huge win on her WTA tour debut, beating Alison Riske in straight sets to back-up an excellent qualifying campaign. The American stunned Jil Teichmann over three sets on Sunday to make the main draw and she will earn a big backing in San Jose as the severe underdog in this match-up. World number four Paula Badosa has not played for almost a month since reaching the round of 16 at Wimbledon and whilst, ultimately, that break may prove fruitful this first match back could be a little rusty. The Spaniard won her Indian Wells title in this swing late last season and the conditions should suit her as the second seed at the Silicon Valley but Mandlik will be a big positive force to try and break down. The shock is possible here and the shrewd move could be taking Mandlik to win at least a set with matches in her legs, probably the first, but the sensible option remains Badosa to win outright.
