ELISE MERTENS VS MARIA CARLE PREDICTION
World number 27 Elise Mertens is one of the most dependable players on the WTA tour, with her Grand Slam record speaking for itself. The 28-year-old has reached as far as the semi-finals at the Australian Open in 2018, and back-to-back quarter-finals at the US Open in 2019 and 2020, but perhaps most impressively she has reached at least the third round in each of her seven previous appearances at Roland-Garros – including the round of 16 twice in 2018 and 2022.
This is a tough opening draw, however, as 24-year-old Maria Carle has enjoyed the best form of her career so far in recent weeks. The Argentine set a career-high WTA world ranking of 71st after upsetting Emma Raducanu and Veronika Kudermetova en-route to the third round of the Madrid Masters last month and it took in-form Mayar Sherif to oust her in Morocco last week. Back Mertens to win this first encounter outright.
