THE PREDICTION
World number eight Daria Kasatkina is enduring some pretty erratic form on tour right now but she has beaten the likes of Barbora Krejcikova and Petra Kvitova this season. The 25-year-old beat Tatjana Maria in quick fashion at Indian Wells a fortnight ago but then lost in two to Varvara Gracheva to suggest this opener against Elise Mertens could well end up an upset. World number 39 Mertens is no pushover as a former world number 12 but she has struggled for consistent form over the last few seasons. A consummate opener over Alycia Parks on Tuesday was solid enough but this is a tough match to call given a lot of the outcome rests on what version of Kasatkina turns up in Florida. The Russian leads their head-to-head 3-1 at tour level and she has won each of their last three meetings in straight sets. In normal service straight sets would be the reasonable call but consider leaving this match out of an accumulator and backing Mertens to earn at least a set here to leave the victor up to chance.
