THE PREDICTION

World number 22 Danielle Collins made it nine wins on the spin with a gruelling effort on Thursday, beating Ons Jabeur in three sets before a consummate result over Sloane Stephens due to rain delays. The 30-year-old claimed the biggest title of her career on home soil at the Miami Masters last weekend, already crowning her retirement season with a huge achievement, but she is clearly hungry for more here in Charleston and she will be backed to the hilt in her pursuit of it.

World number 30 Elise Mertens also played twice on Thursday, overcoming Varvara Gracheva in three sets before ousting Elina Svitolina in two, and the Belgian is well capable of spoiling the party here. 28-year-old Mertens beat Collins in straight sets at the Hobart International in January, making it back-to-back wins over the American and levelling their head-to-head at 3-3, but this should edge the American’s way on momentum. Fitness certainly favours the Belgian, however, having played one match fewer this week and far less tennis over the past 10 days, so back Collins to win at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
