THE PREDICTION
World number 10 had to battle through two tight tiebreaks with Sofia Kenin on Saturday as she struggled a little with her serve but she should be better for the early test. The slower conditions at Indian Wells suit the players who can generate their own power easiest and that should suit Rybakina’s apparently effortless groundstrokes here. Former world number two Paula Badosa is a former champion here from 2021, though, after she beat Victoria Azarenka here at the delayed October edition. The 21st seed has struggled to gather enough momentum ahead of this tournament to represent a clear title challenger but a straight-sets opener over Nuria Parrizas-Diaz was a solid enough start to her campaign. Badosa leads Rybakina 3-1 in their tour-level head-to-head record but she has arguably been fortunate to meet the Kazakh in her lower moments in recent seasons and each of their last two matches went to three sets. Three seems likely here but it is likelier still that in-form Rybakina beats the Spaniard in two, so back her to win outright for caution’s sake.
