Both world number 44 Shuai Zhang and number 27 Ekaterina Alexandrova provided big first round shocks in Cincinnati, the Chinese ousting Naomi Osaka in straight sets and the Russian beating Leylah Fernandez in similar fashion. 27-year-old Alexandrova leads their head-to-head record 2-1 after a tight straight-sets victory at the Stuttgart Open back in April in form that saw her win a second WTA title at ‘s-Hertogenbosch in June but Shuai Zhang’s victory over Osaka must not be underestimated. This unlikely match-up looks a tricky call between two players who will be bolstered by their previous results but there looks to be a suitable alternative to picking a winner here.
