THE PREDICTION

World number 31 Ekaterina Alexandrova beat Greet Minnen in straight sets on Tuesday to get a promising Roland-Garros campaign underway. The 27-year-old has twice lost in semi-finals on the clay swing so far, to eventual champions Belinda Bencic at the Charleston Open and Ons Jabeur at the Madrid Open, and she has needed top quality opposition to oust her from her last seven tournaments. Irina-Camelia Begu came back from a set down to beat Jasmine Paolini on Monday. The 31-year-old has also been in fine recent form, with Bencic and Jabeur taking her out of the last two tournaments. Notably, Begu has won both of the tour-level meetings with Alexandrova, including in straight sets at last season’s Cleveland Championships. This first clash on clay is likely to tip back towards the Russian for a first win but the record makes an outright pick something of a risk. Back Alexandrova to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors.
