THE PREDICTION
Defending champion Albert Ramos-Vinolas claimed his fourth ATP title on clay here last season and he will be pleased to return to his favoured surface as he takes a four-match losing streak into the round of 16. The third seed could well have done without his bye given recent form, although he has been competitive in two defeats this season and he almost always brings his best on clay as a true veteran in these conditions. World number 89 Dusan Lajovic is also at his best on clay but the Serb has been steadily drifting down the ATP rankings over the last few seasons. The 32-year-old beat Juan Pablo Varillas in straight sets on Monday to snap a six-match losing streak at tour level, although he did claim a Challenger title on clay in December in a desperate search for some form. The pair share a 2-2 head-to-head record but their last meeting came way back in 2018, where Lajovic’s game was in much better shape. This could be a choppy opener for Ramos-Vinolas but back the Spaniard to edge it outright.
