The 30-year-old has looked like improving in recent months, after struggling for most of the last 12 since returning to tour from a long absence, but he is still far from the player who won the US Open in 2020. World number 58 Sebastian Ofner has lost each of the three matches played against his compatriot but their last two have seen sets go both ways, including earlier this season at the Estoril Open. 27-year-old Ofner beat an out-of-sorts Alexander Bublik in straight sets on Saturday to back-up an impressive comeback over Marton Fucsovics in the first round but Thiem’s laboured progress suggests he can make it 4-0 here. Back he elder Austrian to win outright.
