THE PREDICTION
This is a seriously tough call between two top 10 players currently displaced from that title by ranking. Former world number four Dominic Thiem is on the long road back to the top of the sport after 14 months away from the tour with various wrist issues, whilst Matteo Berrettini is currently ranked at 15th after his 2021 Wimbledon final points dropped off. This would have happened either way due to the controversial deductions by the ATP and WTA at Wimbledon this summer but Berrettini caught covid-19 on the eve of a tournament he was tipped as an outsider to win and he looks to be avenging that misfortune in his first tournament back. The 26-year-old is riding an 11-match winning streak after back-to-back titles on grass but he has transferred back to clay well this week, with a three-set victory over Pedro Martinez a good result on this surface. Current world number 274 Thiem is one of the very best of this generation on clay, though, and confidence is clearly returning the to the 28-year-old.
The Austrian trails Berrettini 2-3 in their head-to-head record but he did win their only meeting on clay at Roland-Garros back in 2018 and he has impressed over the last two weeks on his favoured surface. Back Thiem to win at least a set and leave the winner up to chance in what could be a thriller.
