Former world number three Dominic Thiem won Indian Wells, his only Masters title to date, in 2019 in a precursor to his maiden Grand Slam title claimed at the US Open a year later. The Austrian has since struggled with form, injuries and surgeries but after some promising signs late last season he has started 2023 in woeful form that is shifting from understandable to concerning quickly. 29-year-old Thiem has plenty of years left to return to the top of the sport but the plights of Juan Martin del Potro and Andy Murray at his age must hang heavily on his mind at times. One win from six matches so far this year suggests that world number 68 Adrian Mannarino is the favourite here but the Frenchman trails 8-1 in their head-to-head record and his only win came via an injury to Thiem at the Mallorca Championships in 2021. 34-year-old Mannarino is one of the more unpredictable players on tour these days but backing him to earn at least a set seems the sensible way to avoid picking a winner from this head-scratcher.
