World number 111 Dominic Stricker completed a vastly impressive 3-0 routing of the round robin stages at the Next Gen ATP Finals with a straight-sets victory over Chun-hsin Tseng. The 20-year-old looked like coming into form at the recent Swiss Indoors, where an adoring home crowd cheered on their young rising star as he beat Maxime Cressy before taking Pablo Carreno Busta to three tight sets in the round of 16. A victory over Jack Draper in the first match on Tuesday came as a huge surprise but his most impressive victory so far is taking three of five tiebreaks against home hopeful and top-ranked player Lorenzo Musetti.
World number 74 Jiri Lehecka has gone somewhat under the radar this week in Milan but straight-set victories over Francesco Passaro and Matteo Arnaldi saw him through to the Next Gen ATP Finals semi-finals 2-1. 21-year-old recently beat Grigor Dimitrov at the Stockholm Open after a tough summer but his best run on tour so far came in similar indoor conditions back in February, with a run to the semi-finals of the Rotterdam Open ended in three sets by Stefanos Tsitsipas.
THE PREDICTION
Dominic Stricker looked like the surprise package coming into Milan and he has so far not disappointed. The Swiss has beaten two of the pre-tournament favourites this week in Lorenzo Musetti and Jack Draper and with Lehecka losing comfortably to the Brandon Nakashima – the third player clearly a level above here – Stricker looks in a solid position to edge this first encounter. Sets could go both ways here but back the Swiss to ride his momentum through to the final with an outright win.
