THE LOWDOWN
DIEGO SCHWARTZMAN
World number 13 Diego Schwartzman claimed one of the biggest wins of his career at the ATP Cup last week with a three-set victory over world number four Stefanos Tsitsipas. The 29-year-old ended last season in searing form, with four quarter-finals reached in four successive tournaments and a final at the European Open he eventually lost to Jannik Sinner. The gutsy Argentine is always well-supported at Grand Slams and despite his penchant for the clay he has reached the round of 16 here in Melbourne and the quarter-finals of the US Open in previous years, with a semi-final at Roland-Garros in 2019 his best yet.
FILIP KRAJINOVIC
29-year-old Filip Krajinovic led the line for Serbia at the ATP Cup last week in Novak Djokovic’s absence with two wins from three singles matches a decent return. The world number 39 has finished runner-up in four ATP tour finals, including at the Paris Masters back in 2017, with a loss at the Hamburg Open last summer a hard one to take after a brilliant victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals. The Serb is yet to make it past the third round of a Grand Slam but he did force a fifth set against eventual runner-up Daniil Medvedev at that stage here last season.
THE PREDICTION
World number 13 Diego Schwartzman was picked apart by Hubert Hurkacz in the ATP Cup just a day after taking out world number four Stefanos Tsitsipas in masterful fashion. The Argentine beat the likes of Andy Murray, Gael Monfils, Casper Ruud and Dan Evans late last season in s superb stretch of form and he looks good for another deep run to at least the round of 16 at his current level. This is a surprising place for two of the better clay-court players on tour to meet for a first time and over five sets Filip Krajinovic is fairly likely to force at least a tiebreak in a high-level first round match but take Schwartzman to win through in the end.
