THE PREDICTION

This could be a fascinating clash between an out-of-sorts Maria Sakkari, who brings a 2-4 record for 2024 into Indian Wells and up-and-coming Diana Shnaider, who first came to the fore in an impressive clash with the Greek at the Australian Open last season. 19-year-old Shnaider came back from a set down to beat Ana Bogdan on Thursday to build on her excellent run to a maiden WTA title at the Hua Hin Championships this time last month and she should be in better shape to challenge Sakkari than their first encounter, where she took the first set before defeat in the second round in Melbourne last year.

World number nine Sakkari finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek here two years ago but she finally won a first Masters title in Guadalajara last September in a brief flash of form before another concerning depreciation. A consummate defeat to eventual champion Jasmine Paolini in Dubai last time out got better with age but the 28-year-old is far too good to be doubted at this stage of any tournament, let alone in conditions that should suit her best. Leave this tough call out of an accumulator but consider backing Shnaider to win at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.

TIP: DIANA SHNAIDER TO WIN A SET
