Former world number five Jelena Ostapenko burst onto the world stage in 2017 with her first Grand Slam title won at Roland-Garros not long after her 20th birthday. Ostapenko beat Karolina Pliskova at Adelaide 1 in encouraging fashion but she now takes a two-match losing streak into Melbourne after defeats to Rina-Camelia Begu and Anna Kalinskaya that throw her chances here into doubt. World number 99 Dayana Yastremska is a similar player in some ways, with both players possessing a huge game and turbulent personalities. The 22-year-old set a career-high WTA world ranking of 21st this time three years ago after winning two of her three titles in 2019 but her career suffered more than most when the covid-19 pandemic disrupted the tour and, like many Ukrainians, the current conflict in her country will no doubt have a huge impact.
THE PREDICTION
Yastremska beat Ostapenko in three sets in a shock result at the Birmingham Classic last summer and this could come as close again. Expect plenty of aggro and a topsy-turvy encounter here with unpredictable results. Back Ostapenko to edge things outright but leave this match well away from any promising accumulators.
