THE PREDICTION

World number two Aryna Sabalenka was surprised by a strong performance from Ann Li on Wednesday to survive a scare in three sets. The 25-year-old won the Australian Open back in January to lift her first Grand Slam trophy and she will be considered a clear title contender at the incoming US Open after reaching the semi-finals in New York in successive seasons. Sabalenka has reached at least the semi-finals in each of her last four major appearances but despite a victory at the Madrid Masters in May she has been caught cold a few times at this level this season, including in the round of 16 in Montreal last week to eventual runner-up Liudmila Samsonova. World number 13 Daria Kasatkina has conceded just seven games so far in consummate wins over Peyton Stearns and Varvara Gracheva but is Sabalenka can improve on her opener she should have too much power for the Russian.

Kasatkina played well in Montreal before a three-set defeat to Elena Rybakina and a similarly tough draw looks set to go against her. Sabalenka leads their head-to-head 3-2 and she can be backed to come through outright here.
