THE PREDICTION
World number one Daniil Medvedev beat Ilya Ivashka in straight sets for the second week running after also beating the Belarussian at last week’s Libema Open on his way to the final. The 26-year-old was stunned by the miraculous run of home hopeful Tim van Rijthoven on Sunday but with no chance at playing Wimbledon this season, and the subsequent lack of points on offer from the ATP, the Russian can rest assured that his place at the top of the sport is safer this time around than his first week-long foray. World number 20 Roberto Bautista Agut has always been something of a bogey player for Medvedev, though, with the tireless Spaniard leading their head-to-head record 3-0 after most recently upsetting him at this stage of last season’s Miami Open. 34-year-old Bautista Agut is an excellent all-courter who reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon back in 2019 and after a spell on the sidelines with injury he has impressed at Halle with two robust wins over Marton Fucsovics and Tallon Griekspoor.
Given the former world number nine’s record the shrewd move could be taking him to win at least a set here but Medvedev remains the slight favourite on prestige and taking the Russian to win at least a set instead is the more suitably cautious approach. Perhaps three sets could be the valuable compromise - but it would be a risk.
