THE PREDICTION
It is a strange sight to see 27-year-old Daniil Medvedev outside the top 10 on tour for the first time since his meteoric rise in late 2019 and the next few months of his career could define his season after a disappointing 2022. The Russian was shocked by an impressive Sebastian Korda in the third round of the Australian Open last month and three defeats to Andrey Rublev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Novak Djokovic at the ATP Finals late last season are a big concern. Medvedev came back from a set down to beat Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Tuesday and that should see an improvement in his next match against home hopeful Botic van de Zandschulp, who trails 0-3 in their head-to-head record. The world number 35 came back from a set of his own to beat Quentin Halys on Tuesday but he has also started 2023 in relatively poor form and he has not looked the same on court since perhaps last summer’s run to the semi-finals in Winston-Salem. Home advantage favours the Dutchman but the conditions suit Medvedev to a tee. Back the Russian to win in straight sets.
